Mallorca general strike: teachers’ union ANPE stays out
On Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, members of the teachers’ union ANPE face a choice on Wednesday, 11 November: the union will not officially join the general strike, but they can take part. ANPE announces the decision on Friday, 6 November, after consulting its members. It wants to continue talks with the Balearic Department of Education and Universities on pay and working conditions.
Why ANPE is holding back
The union says it could still organise protests if the talks fail to produce firm commitments and results. It respects teachers and organisations that have chosen to strike.
In ANPE’s survey, 83.9% of respondents viewed improvements won through earlier agreements positively to some degree, though some said demands remained unmet.
What members say about the strike
Asked what they would do, 42.6% said they would not strike and would put negotiations first. Another 34% said they would join the strike, while 23.45% preferred other forms of protest.
The timing also divides members. For 49.5%, whether to strike during the talks depends on how negotiations develop and how the authorities respond. Another 34.7% want to give talks more time; 15.8% favour a strike even while talks remain open. For now, ANPE leaves Wednesday’s decision to each member.
