Mallorca tourism: 20m visitors spark Parliament clash
Mallorca could approach or pass 20 million tourists this year, as a row over tourism limits erupts in Parliament in Palma. Tourism Minister Jaume Bauzá said on Tuesday that the measures are working. MÉS per Mallorca accused him of lying and living in a “parallel world”.
Bauzá pointed to zero growth and a shrinking supply of holiday homes. Tourist numbers rose by 6% in July 2023, he said, but growth stayed below 1% in 2024, 2025 and 2026.
“The tourist pressure in high season has fallen,” Bauzá said. “Containment policies are working and having an effect.”
MÉS MP Marta Carrió rejected that assessment, saying the Balearic Government was backing limits “with its face covered” while airport operator AENA expanded its growth forecasts openly. “Mallorcans cannot live well in their own home; we have to shrink,” she said.
Bauzá hit back by noting that Carrió, when she was director general for youth, had moved youth hostels into the tourism sector.
