Mallorca tourism row: minister calls bishop a hypocrite
Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, faces a row over tourism: a minister calls the island’s bishop a “hypocrite” after he warns about overcrowding and damage to the land. Bishop Sebastià Taltavull raised those concerns in an article for Ara Balears last weekend, and Jaume Bauzá replied on X. On Thursday, 5 November, environmental group GOB accused Bauzá of trying to discredit him.
Bauzá is the Balearic government’s minister for tourism, culture and sport. GOB says a public official should listen to criticism, discuss it and explain what action they plan to take, rather than make a personal attack.
The group says Taltavull’s concerns about overcrowding, difficulty finding housing and pressure on the land are widely shared. It links those worries to protests that have brought tens of thousands of people onto the streets.
GOB recently met the bishop and says they found common ground on protecting the land, recognising ecological limits and making a liveable future fair across generations. It wants the government to tackle the causes of the problems instead of attacking those who raise them.
