Mallorca train cuts spark row in Palma parliament

August brought fewer train and metro services on Mallorca. At the Parliament of the Balearic Islands in Palma on 9 September, socialist MP Ares Fernández said the planning behind the cuts had failed. Housing, Territorial Planning and Mobility Minister José Luis Mateo defended the Balearic government’s approach, saying the reductions lasted only for August.

Mateo said timetables had been cut for a month and a half during the previous legislature. He rejected criticism from the PSIB, saying those responsible for longer reductions were in no position to lecture the current government.

Fernández pointed to reduced frequencies and timetables, as well as congestion affecting mobility. He said railway improvements were understandable, but argued that work at the Son Rullan workshops had been foreseeable and that no alternative had been offered to keep services running normally.

Mateo also accused the PSIB of a contradiction over airport policy. He said the party talks in the Balearic Islands about restraint and reducing growth while the Government opposes a law on shared airport management.
