Mallorca university joins network in 94 countries
Mallorca: the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) joins a network of nearly 1,000 universities in 94 countries after signing a charter on academic freedom. The university announced its move on 29 October. Its vice-rector, Pau de Vílchez, attended the charter’s annual conference at Mykolas Romeris University in Vilnius, Lithuania, from 14 to 16 October.
The Magna Charta Universitatum 2020 sets out principles for universities, including academic freedom, institutional independence and responsibility to society. At the conference, the UIB delegation also took training on how to put those values into the university’s management and daily work. That work is intended to feed into its next strategic plan.
The charter was first signed by 388 universities in 1988. It called for universities to create and share knowledge free from political, economic or ideological pressure. The revised 2020 version retains those principles and gives greater emphasis to academic integrity, freedom of research and universities’ contribution to society. The wider network includes universities that signed either version.
