Mallorca vehicle transfers now face a tax check
A vehicle transfer in Mallorca and the rest of the Balearic Islands will only be processed after a tax check gives the buyer the all-clear. Spain’s Central Traffic Headquarters will send vehicle-register data to the Balearic Tax Agency, known as ATIB, under an agreement published in the Official State Gazette on Wednesday, 9 September.
The arrangement covers vehicles registered in Spain when a transfer falls under property transfer and documented legal acts tax, or inheritance and gift tax rules. It also allows data to be shared for new vehicle taxes recorded in the national register.
Register data goes to the tax agency
ATIB will be able to see the holder’s official identity document, the vehicle’s make and model, first registration date, engine size and previous ownership changes.
The new deal replaces earlier data-sharing agreements between the Directorate-General for Traffic and several autonomous communities, which have expired. Its stated aim is to make the process fully electronic.
No transfer without a favourable report
ATIB will tell the Central Traffic Headquarters electronically only whether the buyer has met the relevant tax obligations. Traffic officials will handle the change of ownership only after receiving a favourable report, without requiring extra documents from the person involved.
A joint commission of two representatives from each body will oversee the agreement.
