Mallorca raises over €170,000 for Venezuela quake families
Mallorca puts more than €170,000 towards helping families hit by June’s earthquakes in Venezuela, while five tonnes of donated supplies still await shipment from Valencia. The Diocese of Mallorca reported the aid effort on Tuesday, 6 October. Cáritas Mallorca collected €140,779 in two months, and Mallorca Missionera contributed €30,000.
Food, water and help rebuilding homes
Cáritas sent its funds to teams working in Venezuela through a network of 37 diocesan branches and more than 600 parish groups. They provided food, water, sanitation, healthcare, temporary shelter and psychological support. A second phase focused on rebuilding homes and helping families restore their livelihoods.
Of Mallorca Missionera’s €30,000, €10,000 came from a charity dinner in Son Servera, Mallorca. Parishes and individuals gave the rest. Mallorcan missionaries also gave up money due to them from a fundraising campaign and postponed planned projects so the Venezuela response could take priority.
Five tonnes still waiting in Valencia
The parish of the Immaculate Conception in Son Sardina, Mallorca, collected and sorted donated supplies. One tonne went to Venezuela by air. Another five tonnes remain in Valencia, waiting to travel by sea.
Elsewhere on Mallorca, Santa Catalina Thomàs parish has raised about €7,000 so far through a charity market and private donations for families affected by the earthquakes.
