91 Mallorca weather stories enter the UIB archive

Mallorca’s forests, fires and floods are among 91 weather and environment stories now preserved by the Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB). The university added the collection, Atalaiant des de l'espai, to its institutional repository in Palma on Tuesday, 22 September 2026.

Doctor Joan Bauzá wrote the articles for the weekend edition of Ara Balears between 2016 and 2020. Written in Catalan for non-specialists, they use satellite images and other geographical information to make sense of what is happening on Mallorca and across the Balearic Islands.

Mallorca is the collection’s main focus, but the pieces also range across the other islands, the Mediterranean and other territories. They cover wind, drought, frost, calima episodes, light pollution, the embat and changes in sea level, as well as land-surface temperature.

Each story starts with an image. Bauzá then traces where the data came from, how the image was made and what the observed phenomenon can mean for the territory or society. Examples, metaphors and straightforward storytelling replace heavy technical language.

The view from above comes from Sentinel-2, Landsat, Terra and Aqua satellites, alongside LiDAR sensor data. The collection also draws on digital terrain models and vegetation indices, using observations from space to bring the processes behind the images closer to the public.
