Mallorca woos British winter tourists in London
Mallorca is courting British winter holidaymakers: more than 100 people have attended a London showcase of the island’s music, traditions and food. The Council of Mallorca staged A Winter in Mallorca at The Charterhouse during the World Travel Market travel fair, it said on 4 November. Council president Llorenç Galmés was among the guests.
Frédéric Chopin’s music helped create a symbolic link between the London venue and the Charterhouse of Valldemossa on Mallorca. Young performer Adrián Sánchez sang the Song of the Sibyl. The programme also introduced guests to the bonfire traditions of Sant Antoni and Sant Sebastià, almond blossom and Mallorcan cooking.
The Responsible Tourism Foundation of Mallorca backed the event. The council hopes it will bring British visitors to the island in winter, while showing them its culture and encouraging tourism that respects its heritage. Galmés said Mallorca has more to offer than a summer holiday.
