Mallorca house fire: third suspect held in Manacor

Police have arrested a third man over a house fire on the outskirts of Manacor, Mallorca, after two men fled pistol threats linked to an alleged unpaid debt. The National Police made the latest arrest on Monday, 8 September. Detectives say the blaze was deliberately started and found four separate fire points inside the home.

The two men told officers that about ten young people known in the town had come to the property early last Tuesday, demanding money over the alleged debt. One of the group was carrying a pistol, police said. The men hid before running from the house and taking cover in nearby bushes.

Officers searched for those involved and set up checks on the roads into and out of Manacor. A patrol later took the two men back to the house, where they saw smoke and flames coming from inside. Firefighters and local police were already tackling the blaze.

One of the men received a call during the operation from a suspected attacker, police said. The caller allegedly demanded that he go to a point in the town to settle the debt and continued making threats.

National Police officers had already arrested two men over the fire. One also faces an allegation of making death threats with a pistol. Investigators found that two of the four fire points were at the building’s only exits.

Manacor’s Judicial Police and forensic officers are continuing to identify and trace everyone allegedly involved. Police have not ruled out further arrests. One of the first two detainees is also accused of damaging police-station security facilities and attacking officers.
