Manacor nurse faces losing Mallorca health post

A nurse leading the Basic Health Zone of Manacor, Mallorca, faces losing the post if a court appeal fails. On Wednesday, 9 September, PSIB, MÉS per Mallorca and Unidas Podemos presented a joint amendment outside the Balearic Parliament in Palma. They want to secure nurses’ access to management jobs in basic health zones.

The parties and the INForça platform want to use an amendment to the Capitality Law, now before Parliament, to quickly change a decree of the Balearic Islands Health Service, IBSalut.

Their proposal creates three professional coordination roles: medical, nursing and administrative. If a doctor runs a health centre, the nursing and administrative coordinators would also be in place. If a nurse is in charge, there would be a medical coordinator and an administrative one.

Sergio Torosa, regional deputy secretary of Satse Baleares, said the move should make the need visible and ensure “nobody ever doubts that a nurse can run a health centre”.

INForça said the amendment was prompted by the Manacor case. The nurse’s appointment has been challenged before the High Court of Justice of the Balearic Islands. She would have to leave the role if a cassation appeal by IBSalut and Coiba does not succeed, because the current rules prevented nurses from taking charge of basic health zones.
