Mallorca police paid €43 an hour to plug shift gaps

Manacor Town Hall in Mallorca has created a voluntary overtime pool for Local Police officers when regular shifts do not have enough staff. Officers who take on the extra work will receive €34 an hour by day and €43 at night. The PP has demanded answers from mayor Miquel Oliver over the staffing shortfall.

The scheme is intended to keep particular duties and shifts covered when the officers available are insufficient. Pay rises further depending on an officer’s professional grade.

PP presses Manacor mayor over staffing

Jaume Mut, the PP’s candidate for mayor, says the arrangement shows the council is struggling to find enough officers for its usual services. He says there is no record of Manacor applying to the Balearic Government’s shared roster of Local Police officers.

Mut argues that the council should seek reinforcements before asking the same officers to work more hours. He stressed that his criticism is aimed at the municipal government, not Manacor’s Local Police, whose work he described as essential.

Government roster filled 101 posts

The Balearic School of Public Administration runs the shared roster for councils needing Local Police staff. According to the PP, it has filled 101 of the 116 posts requested by 35 Balearic municipalities since 2024.

The party says the average wait between a council’s request and a post being filled was five days. Mut called the situation worrying in light of security and coexistence problems reported in several parts of Manacor in recent months, and urged the council to strengthen the force and plan deployments earlier.
