Maó bus station's empty floors to become eight homes
Maó, Menorca: Eight public rental homes are planned for two unused floors of the town’s bus station. The Balearic government presented the project on Wednesday, 30 September, as part of its effort to increase affordable housing for people who live on the islands.
The plan had been stuck since 2021. That year, Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca handed the building over to the Balearic housing institute, Ibavi, free of charge. But the change of use could not move forward because the building falls within the S’Esplanada redevelopment plan, which has yet to be carried out.
In July, the regional government designated the housing project an investment of regional interest. Housing minister José Luis Mateo said that would speed up its approval and delivery.
The first and second floors are due to hold eight two-bedroom homes, each between 45 and 49.90 square metres. One will be adapted for people with disabilities. The work is budgeted at about €690,000, excluding tax.
The government expects to put the work out to tender soon. It aims to start building in early 2027, with construction expected to take ten months.
