Mallorca TV pioneer Maria Lluïsa Suau dies at 87

Mallorca loses a pioneer of Catalan-language television: Palma-born journalist Maria Lluïsa Suau dies aged 87. The Balearic Islands government offers its condolences on Wednesday, 30 September. Suau presented the first edition of TVE’s Informativo Balear in 1979.

Suau began her career at Radio Popular, covering the Balearic Islands’ transition to democracy. On 15 November 1979, she presented the debut of Informativo Balear, a Catalan-language news programme made in the islands. For its first few months, it was broadcast daily from Madrid.

As well as presenting the news, Suau followed the work of Balearic deputies and senators in Madrid. The government credited her daily programme with helping establish Catalan in the islands’ media. She received the Ramon Llull award in 2008 for her pioneering journalism.
