On 23 September, Abascal was carried on a stretcher from her home on Calle Alcalde Sainz de Baranda, in Madrid’s Retiro district, and taken to hospital because of her poor health. The eviction went ahead despite a protest by dozens of activists.

Abascal became a symbol of the fight for housing, which has led to a protest camp at Puerta del Sol. In a statement, the union says it will carry on doing what she always asked of it: “Fight, keep fighting for what is yours.”
