Mallorca: Vox blocks minute’s silence for Maricarmen
In Palma, Mallorca, Vox blocks a proposed minute’s silence for Maricarmen in the Balearic Parliament on Tuesday. The elderly woman died after being evicted from a flat in Madrid, Spain, without being able to return home. The Socialist Party of the Balearic Islands (PSIB) had asked for the tribute at the start of the sitting.
Parliament’s speaker, Gabriel Le Senne, initially refused to put it on the agenda, saying the parties had not reached a consensus. Lluís Apesteguia of MÉS per Mallorca urged him to ask each group for its view. MÉS per Mallorca, Més per Menorca and Unidas Podemos supported the silence, but Vox spokeswoman Manuela Cañadas opposed it, dismissing it as political theatre by the left.
The conservative People’s Party (PP) did not say whether it would have agreed. Its spokesman, Sebastià Sagreras, said Vox’s opposition meant the tribute could not go ahead. He offered condolences to Maricarmen’s family and friends.
Later, PSIB MP Carol Marquès used a minute of her speaking time during a question to the Balearic government to remember Maricarmen in silence. Other left-wing MPs joined her.
