Evicted at 87: Armengol seeks tribute for Maricarmen
Maricarmen Abascal, 87, has died after being evicted from the home she rented two weeks ago. On Friday, 16 October, Congress president Francina Armengol plans to propose a minute’s silence for her in Spain’s lower house in Madrid. Abascal’s eviction has become a symbol of the fight for decent housing.
Armengol will make the proposal at the start of a meeting of the Congress’s Permanent Deputation, which stands in for the full chamber between parliamentary terms. She also plans to call for a separate minute’s silence for victims of violence against women. MPs are due to vote on two government decree-laws at the meeting.
It is unclear whether MPs from the People’s Party (PP) and Vox will join the tribute to Abascal. Representatives of both parties rejected a tribute to her in the Madrid regional assembly on Thursday. PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo accused Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and the Socialist Party of trying to “manipulate” Spaniards over housing, without naming Abascal. Other PP figures expressed sorrow at her death but warned against using it as an election prop.
