Balearic Enric Mas chases world title in Montreal

Balearic rider Enric Mas leads Spain into the men’s road race at the World Road Cycling Championships in Montreal, Canada, on Sunday 27 September. He arrives as a leading contender after winning the 2026 Vuelta a España, while two-time champion Tadej Pogacar is out injured. The Slovenian won the rainbow jersey in 2024 and 2025 but was forced to leave this year’s Vuelta after a heavy crash while leading the race.

Mas faces Evenepoel and a deep field

Mas is guided by Spain coach Alejandro Valverde. Juan Ayuso, Markel Beloki, Carlos Verona, Iván Romeo, Raúl García Pierna, Marcel Camprubí and Igor Arrieta complete the Spanish squad.

Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel is one of the riders to watch. He won the world time-trial title in Montreal this week and the Grand Prix de Québec, and is chasing the road-race rainbow jersey he last held in 2022. Wout van Aert is also in Belgium’s selection.

France’s Paul Seixas made the time-trial podium and finished second at the GP de Montreal. Mexico’s Isaac del Toro won that race. Former world champion Mathieu van der Poel, Britain’s Tom Pidcock and Norway’s Tobias Halland Johannessen are also set to start.

Twelve laps and 3,803 metres to settle it

The 273.4-kilometre race starts in Brossard before the peloton takes on 12 laps of the Mont-Royal city circuit in Montreal. Riders face 3,803 metres of accumulated climbing.

The Voie Camillien-Houde climb could decide the title. It stretches for 1.6 kilometres at an average gradient of 7.7 per cent, before the finish at Parc Jeanne-Mance.
