Mask case: Ábalos and two others told to pay €647,000
Madrid, Spain: Three men convicted in the mask case have 15 days to pay €647,000. Spain’s Supreme Court has ordered former transport minister José Luis Ábalos, his former adviser Koldo García and businessman Víctor de Aldama to pay fines, surrender proceeds from bribery and compensate two public companies. Europa Press reported the order on 4 November 2026.
The fines are €52,500 for Ábalos, €45,750 for García and €72,000 for Aldama. The court also wants the three men to surrender €430,298 in bribery proceeds. It says they are jointly liable until that amount is recovered. According to the judgment, Aldama distributed the money; the court’s breakdown includes €10,000 a month for 34 months and rent on two properties.
Ábalos and García must also jointly compensate the public companies Ineco and Tragsatec by €34,450 and €9,500.54 respectively. Ábalos’s former partner, Jéssica Rodríguez, was employed by the companies and received pay without working, according to the judgment. If the fines and compensation remain unpaid after two weeks, the court can enforce collection.
The order follows June’s judgment, which sentenced Ábalos to 24 years in prison and García to 19, with maximum time to be served set at 16 and a half years and 15 years respectively. Both have been in prison since November 2025, initially on remand. Aldama received a four-year sentence but avoided prison because he cooperated with the justice system. He must report to the court every six months on his work and business activities, and has two weeks to confirm his consent to a year of community service.
