Mallorca mask row: PP presses Armengol over €4 million

The Balearic Islands have yet to recover four million euros from a pandemic mask contract, People’s Party candidate José Vicente Marí says at an event in Inca, Mallorca, on 7 November. He holds former Balearic president Francina Armengol politically responsible and demands to know why her government waited three years before trying to reclaim the money.

Marí’s accusations follow action by prosecutors in a court case over suspected corruption in contracts for medical supplies during the pandemic. He claims Armengol’s government accepted procurement orders from people around José Luis Ábalos, then organisation secretary of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party, without the checks required for public spending.

Armengol, now president of Spain’s Congress, must explain why her government accepted those orders without questioning them, Marí says. He also wants the money recovered and political responsibility established.
