Mallorca's Manacor mayor steps down but stays on council
Manacor on Mallorca faces a change of mayor on Thursday: Miquel Oliver is stepping down after more than seven years, but will stay on the town council. Oliver, of MÉS per Mallorca, explained the decision at a press conference on Tuesday, 6 October. He wants more time to prepare his candidacy for president of the Consell de Mallorca, the island council.
Oliver said he had considered the move for some time and had not found it easy. He said he could not be everywhere at once.
Ferran Montero, the councillor responsible for cultural promotion and education, is proposed as his replacement. An extraordinary council meeting on Thursday is due to decide the change. Montero is also set to stand for MÉS per Mallorca at the next local election.
Oliver will continue as a councillor with a lighter workload. Once in office, the new mayor will decide how to divide responsibilities and working time across the governing team. Oliver hopes to keep the culture brief.
