Balearic university backs 5,000-page Catalan grammar
Five volumes, around 5,000 pages: the University of the Balearic Islands has helped publish a new grammar of medieval Catalan. The University of València announces the book on 6 October. More than 60 specialists have written its 57 chapters.
The Gramàtica del català antic focuses on how sentences were built — the part of medieval Catalan that has received the least study, according to the University of València. It also covers sounds, vocabulary and word forms. Examples drawn from medieval texts show how people used the language and how it changed over time.
The grammar is already on sale at the University of València bookshop and through its publishing website. It is due to reach libraries in Catalan-speaking areas and universities that study Romance languages.
