Warmer Mediterranean raises Balearic storm risk

A warmer Mediterranean Sea could make severe weather more damaging in the Balearic Islands when atmospheric conditions also favour storm development, experts said in Palma, Mallorca, on 22 August 2026. Sea temperatures around the islands have exceeded 30C this summer, according to Jorge Rodríguez of the Spanish State Meteorological Agency and ocean physicist Alejandro Orfila of the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies.

Both experts stressed that high sea temperatures alone do not guarantee torrential rain, violent thunderstorms or extreme waves. Severe events require atmospheric instability, moisture and a trigger that forces warm air upwards, setting cloud growth and heavy rainfall in motion.

Heat stored at sea can feed severe weather

Rodríguez said warmer water increases moisture near the surface, providing energy for powerful storms when the wider weather pattern is favourable. Orfila said the sea retains heat for longer than the atmosphere, allowing energy to return to cooler air masses through evaporation.

That exchange can contribute to the conditions behind cold-air episodes, known as DANAs, and excessive rainfall. Orfila said warming waters mean more energy is available to the atmosphere, potentially making future weather events more severe.

Flood-prone areas, beaches and marine life at risk

Orfila identified torrent catchments, floodplains and low-lying areas including Pollença and Alcúdia as particularly exposed during intense and prolonged rainfall. Beaches and low coastal stretches would be most vulnerable during extreme wave events, while the islands’ setting leaves them especially exposed to sea-atmosphere interactions.

Rising water temperatures could also disrupt marine ecosystems. Orfila cited research indicating that Posidonia oceanica could disappear from the sea as temperatures rise, while other species may come under stress, vanish or move towards cooler waters.

More frequent extreme waves, combined with sea-level rise, could result in the loss of 60 per cent of Balearic beaches by the end of this century, according to a study cited by Orfila.
