Menorca airport row: PSOE targets Aena talks

Plans for Menorca Airport are at the centre of a political row after the PSOE accused island council president Adolfo Vilafranca of failing to seek meetings with airport manager Aena. The party made the claim on Menorca on Wednesday, 23 September. It says Vilafranca has not requested a meeting with Aena since taking office.

The Socialists say the council should have sought first-hand details of Aena’s airport plans, put Menorca’s needs to the manager and pressed for a solution over the new physical control tower.

They also say Aena offered Vilafranca a meeting to explain projects for Menorca Airport under DORA 2027-2031, but that he did not agree to sit down with the company.

PSOE Menorca general secretary Pepe Mercadal said Vilafranca should request talks, set out what Menorca needs and keep pressing for an answer. The party also criticised his absence from Tuesday’s parliamentary debate on changes to the Menorca Biosphere Reserve law.

The PP is due to bring a motion on airport investment and the control tower to the next plenary session. PSOE says a motion is no substitute for direct talks with Aena.
