Menorca airport remote tower faces vote to halt plan
Menorca Airport’s planned remote control tower faces a vote in Madrid on Tuesday: Sumar wants the project stopped and a new tower built at the airport. The Transport Committee of Spain’s Congress of Deputies will consider the proposal from the governing coalition party. Sumar says the existing tower has serious structural problems that are getting worse.
The planned remote tower would be operated from a distance. Sumar argues that it cannot be ready soon enough. It says Aena’s work on the existing tower amounts to temporary fixes and points to asbestos-containing fibre-cement panels there. The party wants the old tower dismantled and demolished.
Sumar’s motion is not a bill. It asks the government to get Aena and Enaire to halt the remote-tower project and build a new control tower. It also calls for enough air traffic controllers and air-navigation maintenance technicians at Menorca Airport. Without action, Sumar warns, problems with flight operations could have serious social and economic consequences for the island.
