Menorca airport row puts PSOE Senate pact on the spot

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

A bid to oppose expansion of Menorca’s airport sparks a political row at Monday’s Menorca Island Council meeting. People’s Party (PP) spokesman Joan Pons asks Més per Menorca councillor Noemí García what her party gained by joining the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) to contest the Senate election.

Pons says Més per Menorca had criticised Spain’s central government only weeks earlier for failing to listen to people on the island and had opposed the airport expansion. He asks whether Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has agreed to drop the expansion and whether a new control tower is among the investments planned for Menorca.

The PP says García did not answer either question and instead used disparaging language towards Pons. It calls her response a sign of unease about the Senate pact. The party’s statement does not include a response from García.
