Menorca airport: Sumar seeks new tower over asbestos
Menorca Airport’s control tower has serious structural problems and asbestos-containing panels, Sumar says: the party wants a new tower on site instead of the planned remote control tower. On Tuesday, 29 September, the Spanish Congress’s Transport Committee takes up its proposal.
The motion is non-binding. It calls on the government to take steps to get airport operator Aena and air navigation provider Enaire to stop the remote-tower project and build a new control tower. Sumar also wants enough air traffic controllers and air navigation maintenance technicians to meet the airport’s needs and the applicable rules.
Sumar says the remote tower cannot start operating soon. It describes Aena’s work on the existing tower as patch repairs and says the building is getting worse. The party argues that its asbestos-containing fibre-cement panels warrant dismantling and demolishing it.
Without a new tower, Sumar warns, problems with airport operations could follow, with serious social and economic consequences for Menorca.
