Menorca Airport tower leaks spark call for replacement
Leaks at Menorca Airport’s control tower have left electrical and electronic systems covered in plastic. On Tuesday, 13 October, the Balearic parliament unanimously calls on Spain’s central government to build a replacement. Unidas Podemos MP José María García brought the motion.
The tower has been in use since 1968. García says its cracks may point to a structural problem. He says the tower limits visibility and makes equipment harder to modernise. He also reports faults that delay take-offs and landings, problems with the radar and asbestos coming loose.
Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party MP Verónica Llufriu says renovating the tower is not viable. People’s Party MP Salomé Cabrera warns that a breakdown would force air traffic to stop. With all parties backing the motion, the demand for a new tower now goes to the central government.
