Menorca car cap row: PP says vote blocks limits

Menorca's proposed car cap has triggered a fresh political row after Wednesday's vote. Més per Menorca and independent island councillor Maite de Medrano, formerly of Vox, voted against changing the Biosphere Reserve Law. The PP says the result prevents the vehicle limit from moving ahead with legal safeguards.

Cristóbal Marqués, president of PP Menorca, said the legal change was needed after technical experts made clear that the cap could not be developed securely without it. He accused Més per Menorca of trying to halt a measure it has long demanded.

Marqués also criticised Més for voting alongside De Medrano, whom the party has repeatedly described as far-right and acting against Menorca's interests. He said it was especially striking that the PSOE backed the amendment while Més per Menorca opposed it, despite the two parties having previously governed together and jointly drawn up the law.

The PP leader said Més and the PSOE had spent eight years in government without introducing a vehicle limit. He insisted the PP wants a cap that works and can withstand legal challenge, warning against an improvised measure ending up in court. He pointed to the pedestrianisation of Plaça des Born as an example.

The dispute now centres on whether changing the law is necessary before Menorca can bring in the vehicle limit. The PP says it is; Més per Menorca voted against the amendment.
