Menorca car thefts: man arrested over five stolen cars
Five stolen cars are back with their owners: Spain’s National Police have arrested a man in Maó, Menorca, over the thefts. Four cars belonged to hire firms and one to a private owner. Police reported the case on 19 October 2026.
The hire cars were stolen near Menorca Airport, police say. The man allegedly used the same method each time, fitting number plates stolen from other cars to at least two of the vehicles. Police call these switched plates placas dobladas. The aim was to make the cars harder to find.
Reports of stolen cars were filed with police in Maó. Reports of stolen number plates came from police in Ciutadella and the Civil Guard post in Es Mercadal. Police say forensic reports established the man’s involvement in all the incidents investigated. Officers recovered all five cars and two sets of stolen original plates, and returned them to their owners.
