Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Eight coastal councils on Menorca in the Balearic Islands want better beach access and repairs along the coast: on Thursday, 8 October, the Balearic government finishes gathering their requests. The proposals come from Alaior, Ciutadella, Es Castell, Es Mercadal, Es Migjorn Gran, Ferreries, Maó and Sant Lluís. The government plans to send them to Spanish state authorities for consideration where the state is responsible.

Beach access and storm damage

The councils want work on beaches and dunes, repairs to walkways and easier access to bathing areas. Their lists also cover slopes, cliffs, jetties, boat ramps and bathing platforms.

Several proposals concern stretches damaged by storms and the DANA weather event of August 2024. The councils also seek measures to protect the coast from future storms.

What happens next

The Balearic Ministry of the Sea and Water Cycle will send the requests to the relevant Spanish ministry, which can assess them under its own priorities and procedures. No repairs have yet been approved.

The Balearic government is again asking for a joint committee to coordinate coastal matters with the state. It also wants fees from the use of public coastal areas to help pay for upkeep and improvements in the Balearic Islands.
