Menorca conservatory: three teams reach final stage

Three architecture teams are through to the final stage of the competition for Menorca’s new music and dance conservatory in Maó. The building is planned for a council-provided plot between Borja Moll and Cós de Gràcia streets. The shortlist remains provisional while the period for objections or challenges is open.

UTE SUMA and Peris Toral, b720 Arquitectura SLP and BASIC-AAP SLP have been invited to take part in the second phase. The jury chose them after assessing the teams’ merits, track records and professional experience. It made its decision on 3 September at the headquarters of the Balearic Islands Institute for Educational Infrastructure and Services (Ibisec).

60 days to draw up plans

The three finalists now have 60 calendar days to submit an outline architectural design. The jury will judge the proposals on architectural quality, practicality, environmental sustainability, technical feasibility and how well they meet the centre’s needs.

The competition is being run by the Department of Education and Universities to find a design for a conservatory suited to professional music and dance teaching.

Dance classes, auditorium and library planned

The proposed building will have 3,764 square metres above ground and another 1,507 square metres in the basement. Plans include teaching areas for music and dance, an auditorium, a multipurpose room, a library and specialist classrooms.

The project has an estimated construction budget of 11,78 million euros. It is intended to add elementary and professional dance courses to the music studies already taught at the Claustre del Carme.

The winning proposal will receive 10,000 euros, while the two runners-up will each receive 5,000 euros. The top-ranked team may also bid for the technical design work and construction supervision.
