Menorca coves could get more boat moorings, PSOE warns
Menorca, in the Balearic Islands, could get more boat moorings in its coves if a proposed change to coastal law goes through, a PSOE politician warns. Pilar Carbonero makes the claim in the Balearic Parliament on Tuesday, 6 October 2026. She accuses the Balearic government of seeking more moorings along Menorca’s coast while taking powers away from the Island Council of Menorca.
The change Carbonero opposes
Carbonero says amendment 38 to the coastal bill would remove a ban on expanding moorings and places to anchor boats outside ports. In her account, wording that says expansion “will not be allowed” would change to “may be allowed”.
She has asked Juan Manuel Lafuente, the Balearic minister for the Sea and Water Cycle, to withdraw the amendment. She also wants the government to respect the Island Council’s powers and the limits set by the Biosphere Reserve Law.
Minister defends coastal bill
Lafuente says the bill is still going through parliament. He says it sets out responsibilities for the coast and aims to balance public use with protection. He also says it protects coastal heritage, including shoreline huts, quays, boat ramps and historic buildings.
