Menorca food prices: PP wants zero VAT on basics
Menorca’s food prices have risen 41.8% since 2018, according to the People’s Party: its Senate candidate wants to scrap VAT on basic groceries ahead of the 29 November general election. Ramon Sintes makes the call on Tuesday, 3 November, saying tax cuts would leave families on the island with more money at the end of the month. His party says overall prices have risen 28.3% since 2018, while tax receipts have grown 55.1%.
Sintes argues that the central government is collecting more tax while families struggle with the cost of living. The figures and the proposals come from a statement issued by his party.
Under the plan put forward by party leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo, value added tax (VAT) would fall to 0% on milk, cheese, oil, eggs, fruit, vegetables, meat, fish and preserved foods. The party also wants to cut VAT on energy from 21% to 10%, adjust income tax bands for inflation and double income tax deductions for children. For now, these are proposals in the party’s election programme, not changes to household bills.
