Menorca housing plans: 251 flats signed off

Plans for 251 private flats in apartment blocks have gained official certification in Menorca over the latest two half-years, the People’s Party said on Thursday. That is 52% more than in the preceding 12 months. At the same time, plans for detached homes are falling.

The certificates cover private proposals, not building starts or completed homes. Jordi López Ravanals, the People’s Party member of the Balearic Parliament, said the figures pointed to a shift towards more apartment-block housing on the island.

Public projects add to the total

The party said 159 public-housing projects have already been launched alongside the private schemes. López Ravanals argued that the combined figures showed a move away from the previous pattern, when more detached houses were built.

He credited the change to Balearic Government measures including tax cuts, easier conditions for private initiatives and less bureaucracy. That is the party’s assessment of the figures.

More homes still needed

López Ravanals said the increase would not solve Menorca’s housing-access problem on its own. The People’s Party says it will continue to push for cooperation between public bodies and private investors to increase the island’s housing supply.
