Mallorca model fuels push for Menorca and Ibiza flights
Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, already draws visitors beyond the summer peak: now the islands’ president, Marga Prohens, wants more flights to Menorca and Ibiza to stretch their holiday seasons. At the World Travel Market in London on Tuesday, 3 November, she said flights to those islands remain heavily seasonal. She has not yet discussed the idea with an airline.
Prohens said tourism businesses and the island councils of Menorca and Ibiza want better flight links. She argues that a longer season would mean steadier work for employees and small businesses, with fewer visitors concentrated in the busiest months. Tour operator TUI has agreed to further meetings to explore how it could support the approach, she said.
Prohens also wants visitors to stay longer. She says shorter holidays have become more common and believes longer stays could ease crowding. Cultural and sporting activities could give people more reason to remain on the islands.
The Balearic government says 1.956 million tourists visited the islands during the 2025–2026 low season. But Prohens opposes airport operator Aena’s plan to increase passenger numbers through Balearic airports to 50 million. She says success should not be measured by ever-higher tourist arrivals. For Menorca and Ibiza, extra flights remain a proposal, with no airline agreement announced.
