Menorca coalition wants island costs counted in funding
Menorca’s island costs are at the centre of a push to change how the Balearic Islands are funded: Senate coalition Menorca al Senat wants them to carry more weight in Spain’s new regional funding plan. On Wednesday, 4 November, the coalition said the central government’s proposal was a substantial improvement on the current system, but still needed work.
It wants funding to reflect the cost of living, the number of people actually on the islands and the extra costs of island life. It says those costs matter especially for Menorca because of what it calls “double insularity”.
Menorca al Senat says it will seek changes through talks and agreements, rather than let party interests or decisions imposed from Madrid stand in the way. As it enters its election campaign, the coalition says its programme will be built around the needs of people on Menorca.
