Over 400 families join Menorca public housing waitlist
Menorca’s public housing waiting list grows by more than 400 families this year: 46 homes that were already under construction when the People’s Party took office remain unfinished, the island’s Socialist Party says. On Friday, 23 October, the party blamed the People’s Party-led Balearic government for delays to new homes and for not applying rent limits. The families joined the list held by the Balearic Housing Institute (Ibavi).
46 homes still unfinished
When the People’s Party took office, 407 families in Menorca were on the institute’s list and 66 public homes were under construction, according to the Socialists. Three and a half years later, 20 of those homes have been handed over and 46 have yet to be finished, the party says. It adds that work has not begun on any of the new developments the government has since announced.
The party says projects already under way in Fornells and Es Castell should have moved faster. It also accuses Ibavi of delays that keep public homes from reaching people who need them.
Dispute over rent limits
The Socialists say the government’s refusal to apply Spain’s law on rent limits or designate areas with strained housing markets is helping drive up rents and demand for public homes. They argue that both measures could protect families from sharp rent increases.
Party leader Pepe Mercadal says the government under Prohens has neither curbed rising prices nor sped up the building work it inherited.
