Menorca rent vote puts 7,200 leases at risk of hikes
On the island of Menorca, 7,200 rental contracts expire before 2029, and tenants lose a proposed option to extend them on the same terms. Spain’s Congress rejected two housing decrees on Friday, with the PP, Vox and Junts voting against them. Menorca’s Socialist party (PSOE) warns that tenants could now face steep increases when they renew.
The PSOE says 18,000 tenants could be affected. It warns that some may have to leave homes they have lived in for years, with few affordable alternatives on the island.
The party says the rejected decrees would also have offered tax incentives to landlords who rent at reasonable prices. It is calling for more public housing, limits on rents and measures that give landlords assurances when letting their properties.
