Menorca rents: 18,000 face steep rises at renewal
On Menorca, 18,000 people have rental contracts due for renewal before 2029. Steep rent increases are very likely, the island’s Socialist Party leader, Pepe Mercadal, warned on Monday as a general election was announced for 29 November.
Mercadal says access to housing is Menorca’s biggest problem and the market will not solve it on its own. He wants limits on excessive rent rises, more public housing and the purchase of existing homes to turn them into public housing. He also wants stronger protection for people most at risk of eviction.
Mercadal calls the election an “opportunity” and says his party is ready. He argues that a left-wing majority in Congress is needed to put those housing plans into practice. They remain proposals, not measures already in force.
