Menorca restaurants: 38.6% lose August sales
Cafés, bars and restaurants on Menorca are losing ground in August, with 38.6% reporting lower takings than in the same month of 2025. Only 19.3% increased revenue, while 42.1% stayed broadly level. The figures come from a tourism-business survey published by Pime Menorca on Monday, 7 September 2026.
The overall season is holding steady despite the gap between sectors. Some 73.6% of businesses surveyed matched or beat last year’s revenue, while 26.4% reported a fall.
Restaurants improved on July, when 44.8% said takings had dropped, but the balance remains negative. The sector points to high temperatures and a wider choice of ready-made meals in shops as factors setting this season apart.
Holiday lets recorded the strongest August result. Revenue rose at 55.6% of the businesses surveyed and held steady at the other 44.4%; none reported a decline against August 2025.
Car-hire firms also had a strong month, with 54.5% increasing revenue, 36.4% staying level and 9.1% falling. Among agrotourism businesses, 40% improved takings and 60% held them, with no reported declines.
Shops were almost evenly split. Revenue held steady for 52.2%, rose for 23% and fell for 24.8%, a weaker improvement rate than July’s 34.2%.
Activity tourism had the toughest August: 46.2% of firms took less, against 15.4% that took more. Nautical businesses also posted a negative balance, with 37.5% down, 25% up and 37.5% unchanged.
Pime Menorca said spending on activities depends heavily on what visitors have left in their holiday budget after accommodation and transport. The association said where people spend, how long they stay and the choices they make after arriving increasingly shape tourism’s real economic impact.
