€100,000 to keep Menorca’s municipal slaughterhouses running: the facilities in Maó, Menorca, and Ciutadella, Menorca, receive €50,000 each under agreements renewed on 27 October. The Island Council of Menorca has renewed the deals with both town councils to help cover day-to-day costs.

The council says the slaughterhouses help supply meat to people on the island. They connect livestock producers with consumers and support the sale of local meat.

A major cost is handling animal by-products that are not for human consumption. The council says this is particularly expensive on Menorca. The funding can partly cover their collection, treatment and disposal, as well as cleaning, maintenance, supplies, services and staff costs.
