Menorca storm: man in swimming trunks found dead
Menorca storm: firefighters recover the body of a man aged between 60 and 70 from the sea off Cala en Brut, near Ciutadella on Menorca, on Monday afternoon. He is wearing only swimming trunks and appears to have been in the water for a short time. Emergency services receive the call at around 18.00, as the 112 emergency service issues yellow and orange warnings for rain and thunderstorms on the island.
The local police alert Spain’s Civil Guard (Guardia Civil) and the Menorca fire service. Firefighters reach the body in a semi-rigid boat and take it to the port of Ciutadella. People familiar with the operation say the sea is in poor condition. The severe weather system Adam is affecting the Balearic Islands and other parts of Spain.
Investigators currently believe the man was a swimmer, rather than someone missing from a small boat carrying migrants. The Civil Guard has taken charge of the body and opened an investigation into what happened.
