Menorca taxi protest: rank-only rides from Wednesday

On Menorca, in the Balearic Islands, passengers must go to a taxi rank for a ride from Wednesday: drivers are suspending calls through their call centre and will not pick up people who hail them in the street. The island’s taxi drivers announced the restrictions on Tuesday as they stepped up their protest.

Drivers say fares have not changed since 2021, making Menorca the only Balearic island whose taxi prices have stayed the same since then. They say they have sent the Island Council of Menorca economic studies each year to support a fare review, but have received no answer. With fuel and maintenance costs rising, they put their losses at 20 to 25 per cent.

The restrictions will remain until Juan Manuel Delgado, Menorca’s island councillor for mobility, agrees to talks with taxi representatives from the Balearic Federation of Transport Businesses in Menorca, the drivers say. They ask residents and visitors for understanding and advise anyone needing a taxi to go directly to a rank in one of the island’s municipalities.
