Menorca university expansion gets €3.7m boost

The University of the Balearic Islands campus in Alaior, Menorca, is set for more space after the Balearic Government backed a €3.7 million expansion on Friday, 25 September 2026. The plan joins an adjacent building to the existing university site.

The government has classed the scheme as being of special strategic interest to the Balearic Islands. It says the funding will help bring forward the start of works.

More room for teaching and research

The university has already bought the neighbouring building. It will be integrated with the current campus, both in its layout and day-to-day use.

The project includes updated facilities, improved energy efficiency and newly equipped areas for teaching, research and knowledge transfer. Academic activity at the Alaior site has grown in recent academic years, exposing the limits of the current building.

Tender planned for final quarter

The University of the Balearic Islands has completed and checked the technical plan, along with the required preliminary studies. With that work already done, the construction contract can go out to tender in the final quarter of the year.

The Alaior campus is seen as key to allowing people in Menorca to study for a university degree on their home island.
