Menorca vehicle cap moves closer with government backing
Menorca’s proposed vehicle cap moved closer on Friday after the Balearic Government backed its passage through parliament. The plan, put forward by the Island Council of Menorca, would change the law on Menorca’s Biosphere Reserve to regulate the number of vehicles arriving on the island. Parliament will now debate the measure and decide whether to approve it.
The parliamentary board had already accepted the proposal for consideration. The government’s decision answers parliament’s request for its position on both the proposal and the next stage of its processing.
The measure forms part of the tools in the Biosphere Reserve law intended to manage vehicle flows while balancing tourism with protection of Menorca’s land and resources.
The Balearic Government has already backed parliamentary processing of a separate plan to regulate vehicles entering Mallorca. It said each island’s arrangements should reflect its own characteristics and needs.
