Menorca vehicle limits: Parliament moves bill forward
Menorca could gain the power to limit vehicles arriving on the island after the Balearic Parliament considers a bill on Tuesday, 22 September. The change to the Menorca Biosphere Reserve law is expected to clear its first parliamentary hurdle. It would allow the Menorca Island Council to bring in restrictions on vehicle entry.
The plan is due to be one of the main items at the sitting, which begins at 09.00 with scrutiny questions for the Balearic Government and the Parliament president. It is expected to win backing from PP, PSIB, MÉS per Mallorca, Més per Menorca and Unidas Podemos.
Opposition parties are set to criticise Menorca for being the last island to bring forward rules of this kind. Més per Menorca spokesman Josep Castells will nevertheless vote for the bill. He says his party does not want the Island Council to use the late arrival of the law as a reason not to apply it. PSIB will also support the measure, having already backed it on the Menorca Island Council.
Parliament will also consider a PP proposal to automatically renew the Special Regime for the Balearic Islands, known as the REB. The set of measures is intended to offset the extra costs caused by island life.
PP parliamentary spokesman Sebastià Sagreras says the measures should not expire because the islands will still face the same disadvantage in 2028. PSIB says it will vote in favour, though spokesman Iago Negueruela accuses the PP of not working with Spain’s central government to put the proposal into effect.
