Menorca vehicle limits reach Parliament on Tuesday
Menorca could move closer to limits on vehicles entering the island on Tuesday. The Parliament of the Balearic Islands is expected to begin examining a change to the Menorca Biosphere Reserve law that would allow entry restrictions. The measure is one of the main items in the sitting, which starts at 09.00.
PP, PSIB, MÉS per Mallorca, Més per Menorca and Unidas Podemos are expected to support opening the parliamentary process. But critics say Menorca is the last of the islands to bring forward rules of this kind.
Backing despite accusations of delay
Més per Menorca will vote in favour, although its spokesperson Josep Castells says the PP has delayed action instead of regulating vehicle entry earlier. He said his group did not want the text to become a reason for the Menorca Island Council to say the rules had arrived too late to use.
PSIB will also back the measure. Its deputy parliamentary spokesperson, Marc Pons, said the party had already supported it in the Menorca Island Council and would keep the same position, while arguing that the proposal had come late.
Housing, fuel and tourism also on agenda
The sitting opens with scrutiny questions for the Balearic Government and the parliamentary president. MÉS per Mallorca and Més per Menorca will raise housing, Vox will ask about rising fuel prices, and PSIB will focus on funding for public services.
Members will also discuss policies aimed at tackling tourist overcrowding on Menorca. A PP motion will consider extending Serra de Tramuntana protection to the marine environment, while another PP bill seeks to renew the Special Regime of the Balearic Islands.
