Mercadona AI takes on tasks for 500-plus engineers
More than 500 Mercadona engineers now use Atenea, the supermarket chain’s own artificial intelligence (AI) platform: it can carry out software-development tasks on its own, rather than just answer questions. Mercadona announced the launch on 30 September in a statement reported by Europa Press from Palma, Mallorca. The company says the aim is to help its teams build software faster and to a higher standard.
How Atenea works
Atenea draws on Mercadona’s processes, tools and quality rules before tackling a task. It coordinates specialised AI agents, each set up for a different job in software development. Mercadona wants that work to speed up the applications that support its business and the digital systems behind its physical operations.
Teams across Mercadona’s technology department have worked on the platform, including staff in operations, design and security.
Engineers keep the final say
Mercadona has formed a group of engineers to introduce Atenea across more areas of development and help colleagues use it. Technical decisions remain with its staff, the company says.
Next, Mercadona plans to use AI agents throughout the software-development process. It also wants to make Atenea more efficient and able to work with AI models from different providers. The announcement gives no details of a change to shopping at its stores.
