Ibiza's Mercat Nou plan sparks balcony protests

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Balcony banners in Eivissa, on Ibiza, put the Mercat Nou plan under pressure: neighbours oppose moving the market onto sports grounds beside Parc de la Pau. On 10 October 2026, the banners show support for the citizens’ platform No al cambio de ubicación del Mercat Nou. The group says it is not against rebuilding the market, but wants a rebuild on its current site to be considered.

Its spokesman, Pere Torres ‘Casetes’, asks whether the proposed move is part of a wider scheme with consequences for the surrounding area. The platform wants people to see what the project involves before decisions are made. It says the size of the new complex, more parking in the centre, the effects on travel and trade, and the loss of sports facilities all need debate. It wants clear information and public involvement in weighing the options.

The banners add to the group’s information campaign and petition. It plans to continue running a stall beside the market in Parc de la Pau every Saturday from 09.00 to 13.00.
